The Chandra Choodeshwara Temple was constructed in 1260 by the Hoysala King Thirupuvanamalla Barvatharaja Anthiyazhvar. Perched on a rocky hill in Hosur, Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, who are worshipped as Chandra Choodeshwara and Maragathambal, respectively.

The name “Chandra Choodeshwara” translates to “Eshwara (Lord Shiva) who adorns the moon (Chandra) as an ornament.” The goddess’s name, Maragathambal, holds symbolic significance as well. “Maragatham” means green, and “Ambal” means mother, a nod to the life-sustaining greenery of nature.

Our Journey to Hosur Shiva Temple

We began our journey from Bangalore early in the morning. December’s pleasant weather made the drive enjoyable, and we were fortunate to encounter minimal traffic. The temple wasn’t crowded, allowing us a peaceful darshan of Lord Chandra Choodeshwara and Goddess Maragathambal.

If you’re visiting for the first time, I recommend using Google Maps to navigate—the route becomes tricky due to recent highway developments. Fortunately, vehicles can reach the top of the hill, and there is ample parking available.

Best Time to Visit: Weekdays are ideal for a quieter experience. Expect larger crowds on weekends and special occasions like Shivaratri.

The temple’s location atop a hill provides breathtaking views and a peaceful ambience.
