Marudhamalai Murugan Temple

The Marudhamalai Murugan Temple, established by the Kongu Cholas during the 9th century, is among the oldest temples in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Subramanya Swamy, revered here under various names, including Marudamalai Andavar, Marudhachalapathi, and Dhandayuthapani.

Marudhamalai Temple's rich history and religious significance make it a must-visit site for anyone exploring Coimbatore. I have provided links to reliable resources at the end of this post for those interested in learning more.

The Legend of Pambatti Siddhar

One of the unique highlights of the Marudhamalai Murugan Temple is the Pambatti Siddhar Cave. Pambatti Siddhar, a revered saint who lived in the 12th century, performed intense penance on this hill.

According to legends, Lord Murugan appeared before him first as a snake and later along with his consorts, Valli and Deviyani, to bless him with the sacred Marudhamalai Theertham.

The stories of Pambatti Siddhar add a mystical charm to the temple and its surroundings.

Our Visit to Marudhamalai Murugan Temple

Marudhamalai Temple

We visited the Marudhamalai Murugan Temple in November 2024, enjoying the pleasant weather of the season. The journey from Coimbatore to the temple was serene and refreshing. Starting early in the morning helped us avoid traffic, making the drive delightful.

As we ascended the hill, we were captivated by the scenic beauty — well-laid roads flanked by dense greenery on either side made it a visual treat. Upon reaching the temple base, we found ample parking space, a boon for visitors travelling by private vehicles.
Steps to Marudhamalai Temple

The climb to the temple summit was relatively easy, with stairs lined by small shops selling flowers, garlands, and other offerings. While construction work was ongoing at the temple, a common sight in many Tamil Nadu temples, it didn’t take away from the temple’s charm.

To save time, we opted for a special entry pass priced at Rs. 50, which allowed us quicker access to the sanctum. The temple's moderate crowd was well-managed, making our visit smooth and fulfilling.

As we were uncertain about our next meal during our temple run, we decided to grab some quick bites at the food stalls within the temple premises.
